Il British Shorthair è gatto massiccio, con un foltissimo pelo che lo rende simile a un peluche, soffice al tatto grazie al sottopelo e denso. Gli occhi sono grandi, rotondi e molto espressivi, possono essere di molte varietà di colori. La testa del gatto è tonda e piena, con le guance paffute (soprattutto nei maschi).
